Week 2: Poland - Thibaut De Bruyker

Welcome to our blog
Hi my name is Thibaut and I will assist my friends on writing this blog about our journey from Belarus to Madagascar.

This week we arrived in Poland, which surprised me for it’s high sunny weather. I expected Poland to be a low temperature country. To my surprise it appeared to be 30° at the time we arrived. A local farmer told us about the climate, he said to us that the warmest region in Poland is Lower Silesian located in south-western Poland where temperatures in the summer average between 24 °C and 32 °C but can go as high as 34 °C to 39 °C.

Cuisine
According to local restaurants, the Polish kitchen has been the arena for competing with France and Italy. We don’t think this is entirely true, because we’ve been in France and Italy and it’s in no way comparable to each other when it comes to food quality and taste. These chefs are off course trying to sell their product, so they are not fully objective. The Polish food is rich in meat, especially chicken and pork. Pasta is also featured in many Polish dishes. Different people have told us that in Poland it is normal that the preparation of food takes a long time. For special events it’s not unusual to take several days to prepare everything. It’s worth noting that most regions of Poland have their own local gastronomic traditions.

Sports
In Poland there are a lot of mountains ideal for hiking, skiing and mountain biking. We went for a hike, which was amazing. We’ve been to places where only a few people have been before. Unfortunately there was no snow at the time we were there so skiing was not an option. These sports attract millions of tourist every year from all over the world. Other popular sports are fishing, canoeing, kayaking and a broad-range of other water-themed sports. Many sports are popular in Poland, but Football is the country’s most popular sport. Poland along with Ukraine, will host the UEFA European Football Championship in 2012. We’ve each bought us a ticket for the final, so we will come back in a few months to watch this football match.
